the Pinky

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

The Crotch Island Pinky was one of the most highly regarded fishing vessels of the late 1800s.   They were inexpensive, fast, weatherly, dry, easy to row, and beachable.  These characteristics make her today an ideal family sailboat.   The boat is cat ketch rigged with sprit sails set on hollow wood spars. The rig has many virtues – its easily rigged and sailed, plus has a very low center of effort.   Her long waterline is easily driven, light air performance is exceptional, yet if the winds up – she’ll fly.
The shoal keel is ideal for trailering or running up on a beach.  The large cockpit easily accomodates serveral people and all of their gear.

1978 Tartan 10

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

Whether it’s an afternoon sail or a bit of racing, the Tartan 10 does it all like no other.  Big boat feel, small boat ease of ownership and operation.  “Giddy Up” has seen it all, most recently she’s enjoyed a break from the buoys circuit with an owner who’s been happy to get her up to snuff  for family fun and  casual sailing, but she’s easily returned to racing form too.   Her big cockpit has room for the group with plenty of sunning room to spare on the foredeck.   The roller furling jib won’t need 3 huskies to set, or two to trim either.    Very easy on the eyes thanks sleek profile, Awlgripped hull and buff colored decks.  The Faryman diesel’s distinctive sound is welcome when the wind fades under a summer sun.  Its new alternator guarantees DC power to all the essentials.   Her folding prop keeps drag to a minimum.    She’s all business – fun business.
